密歇根理工大学初期以庞大的理工科招生规模以及出色的工程技术研究闻名。二战后，学校学科发展不断完善，逐渐形成了五个学院。1928年，美国空军在霍顿校区设置了美国空军预备军官训练团（ROTC），用以培养年轻军官。院系设置具体如下：
